Leave messages
Post a short note when someone leaves your server, showing who invited them, and keep a private staff log of leaves with join date and roles.
On this page
Leave messages let your community (or just your staff) see when someone leaves. Buddy can post a public one-line note in a channel of your choice, including who originally invited the member, and a more detailed log for staff with when they joined and which roles they had. Both live on the Invite tracking page, next to the matching join messages.
Before you start#
Use a staff-only channel for the leave log. It shows member IDs and roles that regular members don't need to see.
Set it up#
It's under Growth in the sidebar.
In Public invite messages, choose a Leave message channel and click Save invite messages.
In Staff invite logs, choose a Leave log channel and click Save staff logs.
You can use one, both or neither. Set a channel back to Disabled - Select Channel to Enable to turn that message off.
Set it up from Discord#
Run /setup feature:Join & Leave Messages (or /setup → Welcome & onboarding → Edit next
to Join & leave messages). Pick a channel for Leave messages and Leave log; clear a
picker to turn that message off. The same panel sets the join message and join log channels.
Settings explained#
| Setting | Card | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leave message channel | Public invite messages | Posts a one-line note when someone leaves, with who invited them when Buddy knows. | Disabled |
| Leave log channel | Staff invite logs | Posts a staff embed for each member (and bot) that leaves: username, how long ago they joined, and their roles. | Disabled |
The same cards also hold the join-side settings (Join message channel, Invite milestone channel and Join log channel). Those are covered in invite tracking.
What's in each message#
Public leave message (plain text):
username left the server. Invited by inviterwhen Buddy tracked the invite they used.username left the server.when it didn't: they joined through your vanity URL or the server widget, before Buddy was tracking invites, or with an invite Buddy couldn't read.
Bots that leave get the public message only if they joined while Buddy was in your server.
Staff leave log (embed, in your server's embed color):
| Part | Shows |
|---|---|
| Author | The member's tag and avatar |
| Title | Member Left (or Bot Left for bots) |
| Description | 🔴 their username, "Joined …" (for example "Joined 3 months ago"), Roles[count] with their roles (the first 10, then how many more) and, when Buddy tracked the invite, Invited by the inviter |
| Footer | UserID: and their user ID, plus the time they left |
Placeholders#
Leave messages use a fixed format, so there's nothing to customize and no placeholders.
Examples#
What everyone sees in the leave message channel:
alex_92 left the server. Invited by sam_7
And for someone whose invite Buddy didn't track:
jordan left the server.
What staff see in the leave log channel:
Troubleshooting#
When Buddy can't post, the reason shows in the Bot errors list on your dashboard's main Dashboard page, under Leave Channel or Leave Channel Log.
Nothing is posted when someone leaves#
- Check the channel is selected and you clicked the save button for that card (Save invite messages or Save staff logs).
- Missing Permissions: Send Messages: give Buddy View Channel and Send Messages in the channel.
- For the staff log, also give Buddy Embed Links. Without it the embed can't be posted.
It never says who invited them#
- Buddy needs Manage Server to read your invites. Without it, joins can't be matched to an invite.
- Vanity URL and widget joins have no inviter.
- Members who joined before invite tracking was set up have no invite on record.
Kicked and banned members show up too#
Discord reports kicks and bans as the member leaving, so they get a leave message and a leave log entry like anyone else. Use server logs to see who was banned.
