Placeholders

Every placeholder Buddy fills in, grouped by feature: welcome, level-up, starboard, boost, YouTube, stream, timed, auto responder, ticket and more.

Placeholders are words in {curly brackets} that Buddy swaps for real values when it posts a message. {server} becomes your server's name, {user} becomes a mention of the member, and so on. Each feature only understands its own set, so a placeholder that works in welcome messages may show up as plain text somewhere else. Use this page to check what each feature supports.

How placeholders work#

  • Type them exactly as shown, including the brackets. Most are all lowercase; {oldLevel} and {boostLevel} have a capital L.
  • A placeholder a feature doesn't support stays in the message as plain text, so a typo is easy to spot.
  • Mentions only notify people when the feature allows it. A mention inside an embed never sends a notification.

Mentioning a role, user or channel by ID#

Many features support these three ID tags:

PlaceholderBecomesExample
{role:ROLE_ID}A mention of that role{role:123456789012345678} → @Members
{user:USER_ID}A mention of that user{user:123456789012345678} → @Sam
{channel:CHANNEL_ID}A link to that channel{channel:123456789012345678} → #rules

To get an ID, turn on Developer Mode in Discord (User Settings → Advanced), then right-click the role, user or channel and choose Copy ID. Some dashboard pages have buttons or dropdowns that insert these tags for you.
