XP bonus drops
Post a daily XP bonus that members race to claim, with rarities, custom templates, timed multipliers, claim streaks and an alerts role.
On this page
Bonus drops add a small daily event to your server. Once a day, inside a time window you choose, Buddy posts a bonus with a Claim XP Bonus button. The first members to click it get extra XP or a temporary XP multiplier. Each drop has a rarity, so most days bring a small bonus and every so often a legendary one lands.
Before you start#
- Drops use the XP system. XP system must be switched on, or no drops are posted and claims are refused.
- Pick a channel members already visit, like
#generalor a dedicated#xp-drops. - Don't put the drop channel in No-XP channels or the XP blacklist: nobody could claim there.
How a drop works#
- Buddy checks every minute. On a new day (UTC), once the current time is inside your window, it posts that day's drop. That's usually shortly after the window opens.
- It rolls a rarity using your weights, then picks a random active template of that rarity. If none of your active templates has that rarity, it picks from any active template.
- It posts the drop in your drop channel with a Claim XP Bonus button, and pings the XP Bonus Alerts role if it exists or can be created.
- Members claim it. Each member can claim a drop once. The embed's Claims counter updates with each claim. When Max claims is reached, the button changes to Fully Claimed.
- The next day, if a drop was never fully claimed, it's marked Expired when the next drop is posted.
There's at most one drop per UTC day.
If you have no active templates, Buddy uses its built-in set: ⚡ Daily Spark (50 XP, common), ⏱️ Focus Hour (x1.5 XP for 60 minutes, uncommon), 🎁 Mystery XP (40–140 XP, rare) and 🚀 Mega Bonus Surge (250 XP, legendary). Add your own templates to replace them.
Set it up#
It's under Levels & engagement in the sidebar.
In Drop settings, pick a Drop channel, then set Window start (UTC) and Window end (UTC).
Adjust Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic and Legendary, or keep the defaults.
Switch Bonus drops on and click Save drop settings.
In Template editor, fill in the fields and click Save template. Your templates appear in Your templates below.
In Discord, run /xpbonussettings and click Post today's drop now to post today's drop right away.
Times are in UTC. If you're in New York (UTC−5 in winter), a 6 pm local drop is 23:00 UTC.
Set the same start and end time to allow a drop at any time of day. Windows can cross midnight,
like 22:00 to 02:00.
Settings explained#
Drop settings#
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus drops on | Turns daily drops on or off. | Off |
| Drop channel | Where drops are posted. | None |
| Window start (UTC) | Earliest time a drop can be posted. | 08:00 |
| Window end (UTC) | Latest time a drop can be posted. | 12:00 |
| Common / Uncommon / Rare / Epic / Legendary | Rarity weights. Higher numbers make that rarity more likely. 0 means it never drops. | 50 / 25 / 15 / 8 / 2 |
Weights are relative. With the defaults (total 100), a drop is common 50% of the time and legendary 2% of the time. Raising Legendary to 10 (total 108) makes it about 9%.
Template editor#
A template is one kind of drop. Click New template to clear the editor, or click the edit icon on a template in Your templates to load it (the button then reads Update template). The Preview card shows a rough look at the drop as you type.
| Field | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Template name | A unique ID in lowercase with dashes, like daily-spark. | — |
| Rarity | Which rarity roll can pick this template. | Common |
| Title | The drop's embed title. | — |
| Description | The drop's embed text. | Empty |
| Reward type | Instant XP, Timed XP Multiplier, Mystery XP or Mega Bonus (see below). | Instant XP |
| Max claims | How many members can claim each drop. | 1 |
| XP amount | XP for Instant XP and Mega Bonus. | 0 |
| Minimum XP / Maximum XP | The random range for Mystery XP. | 0 / 0 |
| Multiplier / Duration (minutes) | For Timed XP Multiplier: the boost and how long it lasts. | 1 / 60 |
| Embed color | The colour bar on the drop. | #00c2ff |
| Icon URL | Optional small image shown on the drop (https:// link). | Empty |
| Active | Only active templates can be dropped. | On |
Reward types#
| Reward type | What the member gets |
|---|---|
| Instant XP | The XP amount, straight away. |
| Mystery XP | A random amount between Minimum XP and Maximum XP. |
| Mega Bonus | The XP amount, with a minimum of 100 XP. |
| Timed XP Multiplier | A personal multiplier on all XP they earn for Duration (minutes) (at least 5 minutes). It stacks with other multipliers. |
Bonus XP is a fixed amount: multipliers don't change it. It can still level a member up, and the level-up message is posted in the drop channel (or your Level-up channel).
A Timed XP Multiplier needs a Multiplier above 1, and XP rewards need an amount above
0. Otherwise members who click get "This bonus has an invalid multiplier configured" or
"This bonus has no XP configured", and the claim doesn't count.
Claims, streaks and alerts#
- One claim per member per drop. Clicking again says "You have already claimed this XP bonus."
- Streaks. Claiming a drop on consecutive UTC days builds a streak. Buddy shows it after each claim, with the member's best streak.
- Blacklists apply. Members with a blacklisted role can't claim, and nobody can claim if the drop channel is blacklisted or in No-XP channels.
- Alerts role. Buddy creates a mentionable role called XP Bonus Alerts the first time it needs it, and pings it on every drop. To use a role of your own instead, pick it as the Alert role in
/xpbonussettings. After a claim, members who don't have it are offered a Get XP Bonus Alerts button. Anyone can also turn it on or off with/xpbonusalerts toggle.
Commands#
/xpbonussettings and /xpbonustemplates need Manage Server. /xpbonusalerts is for
everyone. The /xp bonussettings, /xp bonustemplates and /xp bonusalerts shortcuts work the
same way, with the same permissions.
Run /xpbonussettings with no options to open the XP bonus drops panel. Only you can see it, and
every change saves straight away. Use Choose a section at the top to switch pages:
- Drops: the Daily drops on/off button, the Drop channel and Alert role pickers (leave the role empty and Buddy creates XP Bonus Alerts on the first drop), Time window (a form for Window opens and Window closes,
HH:MMin UTC) and Post today's drop now. - Rarity odds: the five weights and each rarity's % chance. Edit odds opens a form for the Common to Legendary weights (0–1000 each).
/xpbonusalerts toggle EveryoneToggle the XP Bonus Alerts role.
/xpbonussettings [setting] [value] Manage ServerOpen the XP bonus drop panel (or change one setting directly).
/xpbonustemplates Manage ServerOpen the XP bonus drop templates panel.
- To change one setting without the panel, use
/xpbonussettings setting:<name> value:<value>. It takesHH:MM(UTC) or minutes after midnight (0–1439) forwindowStart/windowEnd, and a channel mention fordropChannel. - Post today's drop now posts today's drop straight away. It stays greyed out until a drop channel is set, and the XP system must be on. It counts as today's drop, so the scheduled one won't post again today. It won't post while another drop from today is still active.
Run /xpbonustemplates to open the templates panel. It lists your templates, and New template
opens a form for the name (it must be unique, and can't be changed later), title, reward type, XP
amount and rarity. You then land in that template's editor, which has three sections:
- Basics: the Template active toggle, the Rarity picker, Edit text & claims (title, description and Max claims, 1–10000) and Delete template.
- Reward: the reward type picker and Edit reward. The form only shows the fields that apply (XP amount for instant and mega, Minimum XP/Maximum XP for mystery, XP multiplier and Multiplier lasts for a multiplier), and the page shows what one claim gives.
- Look: Edit look, for the Embed color (a hex color like
#ffcc00) and a Thumbnail URL (https://link).
To edit a template later, pick it from the menu in /xpbonustemplates. New templates start with
working defaults for their type: 50 XP for instant, 250 XP for mega, 40–140 XP for mystery, and
x1.5 for 60 minutes for a multiplier. In Discord, a multiplier must be above 1 and at most 10, it
lasts 5–10080 minutes, and a mystery reward's maximum can't be below its minimum.
Examples#
A template from Discord: run /xpbonustemplates, click New template, and enter the name
lucky-dip, the title 🍀 Lucky Dip, reward type Mystery XP and rarity Rare. Then, in the
editor:
- Basics → Edit text & claims: description
Reach in and see what you get!, Max claims10. - Reward → Edit reward: Minimum XP
25, Maximum XP200. - Look → Edit look: Embed color
#2ecc71.
What members see when it drops:
@XP Bonus Alerts
[ Claim XP Bonus ]
What a member sees after clicking (only visible to them):
✅ You claimed 142 XP!
🔥 Streak: 4 days (best 9).
A one-hour double-XP template: create power-hour with the title ⚡ Power Hour, reward type
XP multiplier and rarity Epic. Then set XP multiplier 2 and Multiplier lasts 60
under Reward, and Max claims 5 under Basics.
Troubleshooting#
No drop was posted today#
- XP system and Bonus drops on must both be on, and a Drop channel selected.
- Check your window is in UTC. A drop only posts while the current UTC time is inside it.
- Buddy needs View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links in the drop channel.
- Only one drop is posted per UTC day. If Post today's drop now was used today, that was the drop.
Members can't claim#
- "You can't earn XP here": the drop channel is blacklisted or in No-XP channels, or the member has a blacklisted role.
- "This bonus has expired": a newer drop replaced it.
- "This bonus has no XP configured" or "invalid multiplier": fix the template's amounts (see the warning above).
Nobody gets pinged#
Buddy needs Manage Roles to create XP Bonus Alerts. If the role exists, members still
have to opt in with the button or /xpbonusalerts toggle. Buddy's role must be above it.
My template never drops#
- Make sure it's Active.
- Its rarity's weight must be above
0. With a weight of0, only a fallback (no active template of the rolled rarity) can pick it. - If several active templates share a rarity, Buddy picks one of them at random each time.
