Level reward roles turn levels into something members can show off. Pick a level and a role, and Buddy gives that role to everyone who reaches the level. Use them to unlock channels, give a coloured name, or simply mark your regulars. They build on the XP system, so turn that on first.
Before you start#
- The XP system must be switched on (see XP & levels).
- Create the roles in Discord first. A common ladder is a few roles with increasing levels, like Regular at 5, Veteran at 15 and Legend at 30.
- The free plan allows 3 reward roles. Premium plans allow more (see Premium).
Set it up#
It's under Levels & engagement in the sidebar. Scroll to the Level reward roles card.
Enter the Level, choose the Role, and click Add. The reward appears in the table below.
The card shows how many reward roles you've used out of your plan's limit. When you reach it, the form is disabled.
In the Leveling speed and boosters card, under Level reward roles, pick Replace lower roles or Keep all earned roles, then click Save XP settings.
To remove a reward, click the trash icon on its row and confirm. Adding a role to a level that already has one replaces it, so each level holds one reward role.
Replace or keep?#
This choice decides what members hold as they climb your ladder.
| Option | What happens on level-up | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Replace lower roles (members only keep their highest reward role) | Buddy gives the highest reward role the member has reached and removes the lower ones. | Coloured "rank" roles, where only one should show. |
| Keep all earned roles (roles stack as members level up) | Buddy gives every reward role up to the member's level, including any they skipped or that you added later. | Roles that unlock channels or perks you want people to keep. |
The default is Replace lower roles. The Level reward roles card shows which one is
active ("Currently: ..."). You can also switch it in Discord: run /xpsettings and click
Keep all reward roles, or use /xpsettings setting: keepLevelRoles value: true (or false to go back to replacing).
Buddy hands out reward roles at the moment a member reaches a new level. If you add a reward for level 5 while someone is already level 8, they get it the next time they level up. With Keep all earned roles, that next level-up also back-fills every reward they'd missed.
A few more things to know:
- If a member jumps several levels at once, they get the reward for the level they land on (and, with Keep all earned roles, every reward in between).
- Resetting all XP doesn't take reward roles away.
- Turning off Level-up messages doesn't stop reward roles. Members still get them, quietly.
Settings explained#
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Level | The level a member must reach. 1 or higher. | — |
| Role | The role to give at that level. | — |
| Level reward roles (in Leveling speed and boosters) | Replace lower roles or Keep all earned roles. | Replace lower roles |
Commands#
/xproles needs Manage Roles. /xp roles is a shortcut to the same command with the same
permission. The XP system must be on to use it.
Run /xproles to open the reward roles panel. Only you can see it, and every change saves straight
away. It lists your rewards (level → role), how many of your plan's reward roles you've used, and
whether members keep all reward roles.
- Add reward opens a form with the Level and a Role picker.
- Pick a reward from the menu to open it. There you can change its role, or click Remove reward (Buddy asks you to confirm). Changing the role on a level that already has a reward works even when you're at your plan's limit.
/xproles Manage RolesOpen the level reward roles panel.
Buddy only accepts a reward role that:
- Isn't
@everyoneor a role that belongs to a bot or integration. - Doesn't have Administrator, Manage Server or Manage Roles, so a reward can't be used to hand out admin powers.
- Is below Buddy's highest role. Move Buddy's role up first (Server Settings > Roles).
- Is below your own highest role (unless you're the server owner).
Examples#
A simple three-step ladder, using Replace lower roles so each member shows one rank:
| Level | Role |
|---|---|
| 5 | Regular |
| 15 | Veteran |
| 30 | Legend |
Add it from Discord: run /xproles, click Add reward, and enter each level and role in turn.
The panel then lists:
🏅 Level reward roles
Level 5 → @Regular
Level 15 → @Veteran
Level 30 → @Legend
3 of 3 reward roles used on your plan.
Members only keep their highest reward role. Change it in /xp settings (Keep all reward roles).
With the default curve, level 5 takes 2,819 XP, level 15 takes 37,802 XP and level 30 takes 205,449 XP in total (see How levels are calculated).
Give a channel's View Channel permission only to your level 10 role, then add that role as a reward with Keep all earned roles. Members who reach level 10 see the channel appear.
Premium#
The free plan allows 3 level reward roles. Premium plans raise this limit; see Plan limits for each plan's number.
If a Premium plan ends and you have more reward roles than the free plan allows, nothing is deleted. Buddy keeps giving out only the lowest-level rewards within your current limit, and you can't add more until you're back under it.
Troubleshooting#
Members level up but don't get the role#
- Buddy needs Manage Roles. Without it, no reward roles are given at all.
- Open Server Settings > Roles and drag Buddy's role above every reward role.
- Roles managed by an integration (booster role, bot roles) can't be given by anyone.
- Over your plan's limit? Only the lowest-level rewards within the limit are active.
- Rewards are given on level-up. A member already past that level gets it on their next level-up.
Lower roles aren't being removed#
That's Keep all earned roles. Switch to Replace lower roles and save. Roles update the next time each member levels up.
"Your plan allows up to 3 ... reward roles"#
You've hit your plan's limit. Remove a reward, or upgrade to Premium.
The role I want isn't in the list#
The dashboard lists roles Buddy has synced. Run /setup feature: Update Channels and Roles for Website
in Discord, then reload the page.
"... has Administrator, Manage Server or Manage Roles, so Buddy won't hand it out"#
/xproles blocks roles with those permissions. Use a role without them.
"... is above Buddy's highest role"#
Buddy can't give a role above its own, so it won't save the reward. Drag Buddy's role above it in Server Settings > Roles, then try again.
