XP multipliers & events
Boost XP for server boosters, roles or channels, run double-XP events, and block XP in channels or for roles that shouldn't earn it.
On this page
Multipliers change how much XP members earn. Give server boosters a bonus, reward a supporter role, make your event channel worth more, or run a double-XP weekend. Blacklists do the opposite: they stop XP completely in certain channels or for certain roles. All of this sits on top of the XP system, so turn that on first.
Before you start#
- The XP system must be switched on. These commands reply that XP is disabled otherwise.
- Only the booster multiplier and the No-XP channels list are on the dashboard. Role and channel multipliers, events and blacklists are managed with commands.
How multipliers stack#
Every multiplier that applies to a member is multiplied together, then applied to the XP they were about to earn:
| Multiplier | When it applies | How several combine |
|---|---|---|
| Booster | The member is boosting your server. | One value for the server. |
| Channel | XP is earned in that channel, a thread inside it, or a channel in that category. | Only the most specific match counts: the channel itself, then its parent (category or thread parent), then a thread's category. |
| Role | The member has that role. | Every matching role counts, multiplied together. |
| XP event | The event is running. | Every active event counts. |
| Bonus drop | The member claimed a Timed XP Multiplier bonus drop that hasn't run out. | Every active one counts. |
The result is capped at 25× and rounded to the nearest whole XP. Multipliers apply to both text XP and voice XP.
Worked example: Text XP is 15. A member who boosts the server (booster 1.2) and has a
supporter role (role 1.5) chats during a double-XP event (event 2):
15 × 1.2 × 1.5 × 2 = 54 XP per messageThe same member in a channel with a 0.5 channel multiplier would earn half that: 27 XP.
Daily and weekly rewards (/xprewards) and XP from bonus drops are fixed amounts. Multipliers
don't change them.
Set it up#
Booster multiplier#
It's under Levels & engagement in the sidebar.
In Leveling speed and boosters, enter a Booster multiplier between 1.0 (no bonus) and 5.0. The default is 1.2.
Click Save XP settings.
Or from Discord: run /xpmultiplier and click Booster multiplier (1–5, 1 means no bonus).
Role and channel multipliers#
Run /xpmultiplier and click Add role multiplier or Add channel multiplier. Pick the role
(or the channel or category) and enter the multiplier, up to x100. Adding one for a role or
channel that already has a multiplier updates it.
To change or remove one, pick it from the menu in the panel, then click Change multiplier or Remove (Buddy asks you to confirm).
A multiplier doesn't have to be a boost. A value below 1, like 0.5, halves XP in a busy
channel without blocking it completely.
XP events#
An event is a server-wide multiplier with a name, for things like a double-XP weekend.
Run /xpevent, click Start event, and fill in the Event name, Multiplier (up to x100) and Duration. A plain number is minutes (90); add h or d for hours or days (2h, 1d, 1h30m). Leave Duration empty to run it until you stop it.
The /xpevent panel lists every running event and when it ends.
Events with a duration end on their own. To stop one early, pick it from the menu and click Stop event.
Several events can run at once, and they stack. Each running event needs its own name: Buddy won't start an event with the same name as one that's already running.
Blacklists#
Blacklisted channels and roles never earn XP. That covers:
- Text XP and voice XP.
- Daily and weekly rewards (
/xprewardsreplies "You can't earn XP here"). - Claiming bonus drops.
Messages in blacklisted channels also don't count toward Messages Sent in /xpstats.
| Blacklist | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Channel | That channel and its threads. Blacklist a category to cover every channel inside it, or a voice channel to stop voice XP there. |
| Role | Anyone with that role, everywhere in the server. |
Run /xpblacklist and pick channels in No XP in these channels (text, voice, category, forum,
announcement and stage channels) and roles in No XP for these roles. Each change saves as soon
as you pick. Entries the pickers can't show (threads, deleted channels or roles, or anything past
the first 25) are listed separately, and Clear hidden entries removes them.
The dashboard's No-XP channels (in Channels with no XP on the XP & levels page) blocks XP
the same way, for text channels. It's a separate list, so the /xpblacklist panel doesn't
show channels you picked on the dashboard.
Commands#
All of these need Manage Server. Each one opens a settings panel that only you can see, as described above. Changes made in Discord apply straight away; dashboard changes reach the bot within about a minute.
/xpblacklist Manage ServerOpen the XP blacklist panel: channels and roles that earn no XP.
/xpevent Manage ServerOpen the XP events panel: temporary server-wide XP boosts.
/xpmultiplier Manage ServerOpen the XP multiplier panel: boosters, roles and channels.
The /xp multiplier, /xp event and /xp blacklist shortcuts open the same panels.
Examples#
A supporter perk plus a quiet channel penalty: in /xpmultiplier, use Add role multiplier
for @Patreon at 1.25, then Add channel multiplier for #memes at 0.5. The panel's menu
then lists:
Role · @Patreon · x1.25
Channel · #memes · x0.5A weekend event, announced to the server: in /xpevent, click Start event and enter
Double XP Weekend, multiplier 2 and duration 48h.
The /xpevent panel is only visible to you. Post your own announcement so members
know the event is on.
Troubleshooting#
My multiplier doesn't seem to apply#
- Check it's listed in the
/xpmultiplierpanel. - For channels, only the most specific channel multiplier counts. A multiplier on the channel itself beats one on its category.
- The total is capped at 25×.
- Daily/weekly rewards and bonus drop XP are never multiplied.
Boosters aren't getting extra XP#
Check Booster multiplier is above 1.0 and saved. Only members currently boosting the server
get it.
"The XP system is disabled"#
Turn on XP system on the XP & levels page, or run
/xpsettings setting: enabled value: true.
An event won't stop#
Run /xpevent, pick the event from the menu and click Stop event. Events without a duration
keep running until you stop them.
Someone can't earn XP anywhere#
They probably have a blacklisted role. Run /xpblacklist and remove it from No XP for these
roles.
