Server logs give your staff a running record of what happens in your server: who was banned, who changed their nickname, which message was deleted, who hopped between voice channels. Pick a channel for each kind of log you care about and Buddy posts an embed every time it happens.
Before you start#
Logs can include deleted messages and member details. Use channels only your staff can see.
You can send every log to one #mod-logs channel, or split them up (for example
#message-logs, #voice-logs, #server-changes) so busy logs don't bury the important ones.
Set it up#
Make one or more staff-only text channels in Discord.
It's under Moderation in the sidebar.
The page is grouped into Members and moderation, Messages and Server changes. Leave a log disabled to turn it off.
Click Save log settings. Logging starts straight away.
Set it up from Discord#
Run /setup, open Moderation & safety and press Edit next to Server logs (or run
/setup feature:Server Logs). The panel has a channel picker for each log type, split over two
pages (Members & messages and Server changes). One channel for all sends every log
to a single channel, and Turn all off clears them all. Buddy checks it can post and embed
links in a channel before saving it.
Settings explained#
Every log is off until you choose a channel for it.
| Log | What's logged |
|---|---|
| Ban logs | Members being banned (User Banned) and unbanned (User UnBanned), with the responsible moderator when Buddy can read the audit log. |
| Member update logs | Roles added to or removed from a member, username changes, nickname changes and avatar changes. |
| Voice activity logs | Members connecting, disconnecting and moving between voice channels (with how long they stayed), starting or stopping a stream or video, muting or deafening themselves, being server muted or deafened, and being moved to the audience in a stage. |
| Message update logs | Edited messages (before and after, with a jump link), deleted messages (with the channel and text) and bulk deletes (N Messages Purged, with a preview of the first 10). |
| Channel logs | Channels being created or deleted, and changes to a channel's name, topic, age restriction, slowmode, category, user limit or bitrate, its permission overrides (which roles or members were added, changed or removed), and pinned messages changing. Moving a channel up or down isn't logged. |
| Role update logs | Roles being created or deleted, and changes to a role's name, color or permissions. |
| Emoji and sticker logs | Emojis and stickers being added, updated or deleted. |
| Thread logs | Threads being created or deleted, and changes to a thread's name, lock, slowmode, auto-archive time or forum tags. Archiving and unarchiving aren't logged (Discord does it automatically). |
| Stage logs | Stage events starting, changing (topic) and ending. |
Good to know#
- Bot messages aren't logged when they're edited or deleted, only members' messages.
- Deleted and edited message text is only available for messages Buddy saw after it last started. For older messages the log may say the content couldn't be found.
- Bulk deletes from
/pruneor another bot show up as one Messages Purged entry, not one per message. - Moderator names in ban logs come from Discord's audit log. Without View Audit Log, the moderator shows as
Unknown. - Bans are also recorded as cases in the warn system, whether or not you set a ban log.
Examples#
A deleted message in your message log:
A member moving between voice channels:
Voice and message logs get busy fast. Give them their own channel, and keep bans, roles and channel changes together in a quieter channel you actually read.
Troubleshooting#
Nothing is being logged#
- Check you picked a channel for that log and clicked Save log settings.
- Make sure Buddy can View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links in the log channel. Buddy records missing permissions under Bot errors on your dashboard home page.
- If you deleted and re-created the log channel, select the new one and save again.
Ban logs say the moderator is "Unknown"#
Give Buddy the View Audit Log permission.
Deleted messages show no content#
Discord only sends the text of a deleted message if Buddy already had it cached. Messages posted before Buddy last restarted can't be shown.
A channel permission change shows only who changed, not which permissions#
Channel logs list which roles or members had a permission override added, changed or removed, but not the exact permissions that flipped. Check the channel's Permissions tab, or Discord's audit log, for the details.
My log channel isn't in the list#
Run /setup in Discord, choose Update Channels and Roles for Website, then reload the
dashboard.
