Once Buddy is in your server, three quick steps get you to a working dashboard: log in to the website with Discord, pick the server you want to manage, and (if needed) run /setup in Discord to connect the server's channels and roles. This page walks through each one and explains every /setup task.

Before you start#

Permissions needed
  • You need Administrator in the server to manage it on the website and to run /setup. Manage Server alone isn't enough for the dashboard.
  • Buddy doesn't need Administrator for /setup: View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links in the channel are enough to open the panel, and its health check lists anything else Buddy is missing. See Add Buddy to your server.

Haven't added Buddy yet? Start with Add Buddy to your server.

Set it up#

Log in with Discord

Click Log in in the top bar of discord-buddy.com. Discord asks you to let Discord Buddy see your account, email and server list. Click Authorize and you're sent back, logged in.

Open My Discords

Open the account menu (your name, top right) and choose Switch server, or go to /MyDiscords. The page is titled Choose a server.

Pick your server

Each server where you're an Administrator gets a card. Cards with Buddy added have a Manage button: click it. Servers without Buddy show Add Buddy to server instead.

Check the dashboard loads

You land on the dashboard home for that server. If you see a yellow Finish connecting this server first box at the top, do step 5. Otherwise you're done.

Sync channels and roles (only if asked)

In your Discord server, type /setup and press Enter, then click Sync channels & roles on the panel. (Or pick Update Channels and Roles for Website in the feature option.) Wait for the "Channels Updated" reply, then refresh the dashboard.

Open your dashboard

Buddy added / Buddy not addedWhether Buddy is in that server.
Premium badgePremium is turned on for that server.
Owner badgeYou own the server.

Only servers where you have Administrator appear. If one is missing, check your role in that server, then click Refresh list. Your server list is cached for a few minutes, so a permission you were just given can take a little while to show up (logging out and back in forces a refresh).

Managing several servers

Everything in the dashboard applies to the one server you picked. To work on another, click Switch in the dashboard sidebar or pick it from the server icons on the left.

The /setup command#

/setup is Buddy's admin command in Discord. Every reply is private (only you see it).

  • /setup on its own opens your server's control panel: a health check of Buddy's permissions and role position, what's set up in each feature area, buttons that open each settings page on the website, and quick actions. Using Buddy in Discord walks through it.
  • /setup feature: (optional) skips the panel and runs one task straight away. The panel's buttons run the same tasks: Sync channels & roles, Command roles, XP quick setup, Post ticket button here, Post application menu here, My Premium and Give this server Premium.
/setup [feature] Administrator

Open the server setup panel (only you can see it).

  • feature text, optional — Jump straight to one setup task (leave empty to open the panel) (Command Roles, My Premium Settings, Make Server Premium, Update Channels and Roles for Website, XP System, Create Application Embed with Dropdown, Create Ticket Embed with Button, Server Logs, Join & Leave Messages, Boost Messages, Counting Channel, Daily Activity Report, Warn System, Message Filters, Ban Appeals, Auto Responder)
feature choiceWhat it does
Command RolesLets you limit which roles can use each Buddy command. Shows a page of commands with the roles currently allowed, a Select a slash command to update roles for menu, and Previous/Next buttons when there are more commands than fit on one page. Pick a command, then pick up to 25 roles in Search for roles to allow (deselect a role to remove it).
My Premium SettingsShows your Premium plan and each of your Premium server slots ("Premium Server 1", "Premium Server 2"…) with the server using it, or "No Server Selected".
Make Server PremiumPuts Premium on the server you're in, using one of your plan's slots. See below.
Update Channels and Roles for WebsiteCopies this server's current channels and roles to the website so the dashboard can list them.
XP SystemShows whether XP is on, the current text and voice XP rates and level-up message, with Enable XP System, XP Setup Guide and XP settings buttons (XP settings opens the XP settings panel).
Create Application Embed with DropdownOpens a box for Application Embed Text, then posts an embed in the current channel with a dropdown of your server's applications so members can apply.
Create Ticket Embed with ButtonOpens a box for Ticket Embed Text, then posts an embed in the current channel with a 🎫 Create Ticket button.

Sync channels and roles#

The dashboard's channel and role dropdowns come from a copy of your server stored on the website. Buddy makes that copy automatically when it joins, and keeps it updated when channels or roles are created or changed. If that first copy didn't happen (for example, Buddy was offline when it was added), the dashboard shows this at the top of every page:

Finish connecting this server first.

The dashboard can't see this server's channels or roles yet, so don't save anything until this message is gone. In your Discord server run /setup and choose Update Channels and Roles for Website, then refresh this page.

In Discord, run /setup and click Sync channels & roles on the panel, or run /setup feature: Update Channels and Roles for Website directly. Don't save settings while it's showing: channel and role fields would be empty, and saving could clear what you had. After running the sync, Buddy replies with how many channels and roles it copied:

Discord Buddy APP Today at 4:20 PM

Guilds Channels Updated for Example Server. (Channels: 42)
Guilds Roles Updated for Example Server. (Roles: 18)

The warning can take up to a minute to disappear after the sync, because the dashboard caches server data briefly. Sync again any time a new channel or role doesn't appear in a dropdown.

Turn on Premium#

Bought a Premium plan? Premium belongs to your account, and you choose which servers get it. You can also do this on the website: click Make Server Premium in the server's dashboard sidebar (see Premium). In Discord:

Run /setup in the server

Open Premium in the panel's Open a feature area… menu and click Give this server Premium (or run /setup feature: Make Server Premium). Buddy shows your plan and your Premium server slots.

Click Give This Server Premium

If the server already has Premium the button says This Server Has Premium and is greyed out.

Confirm

Click Yes on "Are you sure you would like to enable premium for this discord server?". Buddy replies "Server name now has premium enabled!"

Discord Buddy APP Today at 4:20 PM

Are you sure you would like to enable premium for this discord server?

Example Server
Yes Cancel

If all your slots are in use, Buddy instead shows Select Discord Server to Replace Premium On!. Pick a Replace Premium Server entry and that server's slot moves to the one you're in. More in Premium.

Enable XP from /setup#

XP is off by default. On the panel, open Levels & engagement and click XP quick setup (or run /setup feature: XP System), then Enable XP System. That switches it on and shows the values in use (text XP and cooldown, voice XP and interval, level-up message and channel). Fine-tune it on the dashboard's XP & levels page or with /xpsettings. See XP & levels.

Troubleshooting#

/setup says Buddy is missing a permission#

To open the panel, Buddy needs View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links in the channel you ran it in. Give Buddy's role those permissions there (check the channel's overrides), or run /setup in another channel. Members with Manage Server also get a Fix permissions button that re-authorizes Buddy with its recommended permissions. Once the panel opens, the health check lists anything else Buddy is missing.

I can't see /setup#

It only appears for members with Administrator. Server admins can also hide or show commands for roles in Server Settings → Integrations → Discord Buddy.

"Only the person that created that message can interact with it."#

The buttons on a /setup reply only work for whoever ran the command. Run /setup yourself. Panel buttons also need Administrator; without it Buddy answers Admins only.

"You currently do not have premium."#

Make Server Premium needs an active plan on the Discord account you're using. Check Account → My Premium on the website. If you just subscribed, wait a moment and try again.

"You do not have permission to manage that Discord server."#

You picked a server where you aren't an Administrator (or lost the permission). Ask for Administrator, then choose the server again on My Discords.

The application embed says there are no applications#

Create at least one application first. See Applications.
