Stream alerts
Post a public "went live" alert with a Join Voice Channel button whenever a member starts streaming or screen sharing in a voice channel.
On this page
Stream alerts tell your community when someone goes live. When a member starts streaming (Go Live or screen share) in a voice channel, Buddy posts an alert with a Join Voice Channel button so others can hop in and watch. You choose the channel, whose streams count, who gets pinged and what the message says.
Before you start#
- Stream alerts are public announcements. They're separate from the Voice Activity Log on Server logs, which is a private record for staff.
- Streams in private voice channels (ones
@everyonecan't see) are never announced, so a private call stays private. - If a channel or role is missing from the dashboard lists, run
/setupin Discord, choose Update Channels and Roles for Website, then refresh the page.
Set it up#
It's under Automation & alerts in the sidebar.
In Go Live alerts, switch Alerts on on. The switch only takes effect when you save.
In Where and who, pick the Alert channel. Optionally choose Streamer roles (only these members trigger alerts) and a Ping role (optional).
In Alert message, edit the Message and set a Cooldown (minutes).
Click Save stream alerts. The next time someone goes live, Buddy posts the alert.
Settings explained#
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Alerts on | Turns stream alerts on or off. You can't turn it on without an Alert channel. | Off |
| Alert channel | Where "went live" alerts are posted. | None |
| Streamer roles | Only members with at least one of these roles trigger an alert. Leave empty to alert for anyone. | Anyone |
| Ping role (optional) | This role is mentioned at the start of every alert, so members who opt in get notified. | None |
| Message | The alert text, up to 500 characters. Supports placeholders. Saved empty, it goes back to the default. | {user} just went live in {channel}! |
| Cooldown (minutes) | The minimum wait before the same member can trigger another alert (0 to 1440). Stops start-stop-start streams from spamming the channel. 0 alerts every time. | 30 |
Placeholders#
| Placeholder | Becomes |
|---|---|
{user} | A mention of the streamer |
{name} | The streamer's display name in your server, without a mention |
{channel} | A link to the voice channel they're streaming in |
{server} | Your server's name |
Only the streamer and your Ping role can be pinged by an alert. Other mentions in the message won't notify anyone.
Examples#
A friendly alert with an opt-in ping role:
🔴 {user} is live in {channel}! Come say hi 👋What members see:
@Stream Squad 🔴 @Alex is live in 🔊 Gaming Lounge! Come say hi 👋
Join Voice Channel
The Join Voice Channel button opens that voice channel in Discord, ready to join and watch.
Create a role like "Stream Squad", let members pick it with button roles or reaction roles, and set it as the Ping role. Only the people who want stream pings get them.
On a big server, set Streamer roles to something like "Content Creator" so only your approved streamers trigger public alerts.
Troubleshooting#
Someone went live but no alert was posted#
- Check Alerts on is switched on and you clicked Save stream alerts.
- Make sure Buddy can View Channel and Send Messages in the Alert channel. If it can't, the problem is noted on the dashboard Error Log (at most once an hour).
- If you set Streamer roles, the streamer needs one of them.
- The voice channel must be visible to
@everyone. Streams in private voice channels are skipped on purpose. - The Cooldown may still be running for that member. Lower it, or set it to
0while testing. - Alerts are for members only; bots that stream never trigger one.
The ping role isn't notified#
Make the role mentionable (Server Settings > Roles > your role > Allow anyone to @mention this role), or give Buddy Mention Everyone in the alert channel.
I can't turn alerts on#
You'll see "Please select an alert channel before enabling stream alerts." Pick an Alert channel first, then save again.
