First impressions matter. In this recipe you'll set up a welcome that looks great and actually helps: a welcome card with buttons to your rules and roles, a welcome image, a starter role, a goodbye message when someone leaves, and a daily report so you can see how it's all going.
It combines welcome messages, welcome images, join roles, leave messages and the daily activity report. Allow about 20 minutes.
What you'll build#
- A welcome card in
#welcomewith the member's avatar, a random greeting, and buttons for Rules, Need Help? and a role picker. - A welcome image posted alongside it.
- A join role like
Newcomergiven to everyone automatically. - A short leave message when someone leaves.
- A daily activity report for your staff.
Before you start, create the channels you'll need: #welcome, #rules, and a staff-only channel such
as #staff-reports.
1. Choose the channels and join role#
It's under Welcome & onboarding in the sidebar.
In Where to welcome members, set Welcome channel to #welcome and Rules channel to
#rules. The rules channel powers the {rules} placeholder and the sample Rules button.
In Roles for new members, pick your starter role in New Members Role 1. You can add up to 5.
Click Save welcome settings.
Keep join roles cosmetic or low-permission, like Newcomer or a notifications role. If you want
people to read the rules before getting access, use a verification gate
instead of a join role.
2. Build the welcome card#
In Welcome message, under Choose a message style, pick Components.
Under Start from a sample, pick Welcome card with buttons and click Use this sample. It gives you a card with the member's avatar, a greeting and two buttons: Rules (jumps to your rules channel) and Need Help? (a private reply).
Edit the text blocks. Use placeholders like {user}, {server} and {membernumber}.
Add a Role Menu block so members can pick roles like Gamer or Event Pings right from the
welcome card. Each option toggles its role.
Under Greetings, write a few opening lines, one per line. Each welcome uses a random one in place
of {greeting}.
Under Extra options, tick Ping the new member when the message is posted so they get a notification.
Fix anything listed under Before you save, then click Save message template.
A few greetings to start with:
👋 Everyone welcome **{displayname}**!
A wild **{displayname}** appeared! 🌿
**{displayname}** just landed. Say hi! 🚀What new members see:
📜 Rules 🙋 Need Help?
Rules only appears when a Rules channel is set. Your role menu shows under the buttons if you added one.
Role buttons and role menus can't hand out roles with Administrator, Manage Server or
Manage Roles, the @everyone role or roles managed by an integration.
Under Extra options, Auto delete can remove the welcome after 1, 5 or 10 minutes, so the channel doesn't fill up.
3. Add a welcome image#
It's under Welcome & onboarding.
In Welcome image channel, pick #welcome (or another channel) and click Save channel.
Buddy posts an image card for each new member with their name, your server name and their member number. It's a separate message from the welcome card.
Free servers get the standard welcome image. With Premium you can upload your own backgrounds, design layouts in the Welcome image designer, and put the image inside your Components welcome card using the Welcome Image card source or the Welcome Image File block.
4. Say goodbye when people leave#
Leave messages are set on the Invite tracking page.
It's under Growth in the sidebar.
In Public invite messages, choose a Leave message channel.
Click Save invite messages.
Buddy posts a short line like "Sam left the server. Invited by Alex", or just "Sam left the server." when it doesn't know who invited them. See Leave messages.
5. Get a daily report#
It's under Welcome & onboarding.
In Daily summary post, pick your staff channel as the Report channel and a Post time. Times are in Discord Buddy's server time, shown below the field.
Click Save report settings.
Each day Buddy posts a 📊 Daily Activity Report for the previous day: members joined and left, net change, messages sent, how many members chatted, how many were in voice, voice minutes and total members. Activity is only tracked while a channel is selected, so the first report covers part of a day.
Test it#
Ask a friend to join, or use an alt account. You should see the welcome card, the welcome image and the join role. Leave again to check the leave message. The report arrives at the next Post time.
Troubleshooting#
The welcome message doesn't post#
- Check Welcome channel is set and saved, and Buddy can View Channel and Send Messages there.
- Buddy lists problems, with the reason, under Bot errors on your main dashboard page.
- Bots who join don't get a welcome message.
The join role isn't given#
Buddy needs Manage Roles and its role must be above the join role. Roles managed by another bot or integration can't be given.
A button or role menu says it can't give a role#
The role is above Buddy's role, was deleted, or has a blocked permission. Fix the role, then save the welcome message again.
The role or channel I want isn't listed#
Run /setup in Discord and pick Update Channels and Roles for Website, then reload the dashboard.
The welcome image doesn't post#
Buddy needs Attach Files in the welcome image channel, and the channel must be saved.
